This Unique Walnut Shelving plank has a 3/4 inch wide Purpleheart (a type of hardwood that is purple)  stripe perfectly set at 4 inches on center from the front edge of the shelf.  
 
Given that Both of the colors from this shelving are naturally derived from the wood species itself, you will get a much more consistent coloration throughout the shelf. For whatever reason these shelves are scratched or damaged in your home, being that they are solid,  scratches will not show nearly as much as a stained piece of wood. A simple application of additional Water based clear coat will make them good as new. It's true, Premium materials do offer a much better experience than something cheaper, especially in this case.
 
Finishing Options:
A) Unfinished - Cheaper and you are responsible for applying the finish of your choice.
B) Finished -  with Watco  Black Walnut Danish Oil then Top Coated with a Satin Water-based Clear Coat. All of which are VOC compliant or better, so you don't have to worry about a bad chemical smell. Finished boards will take longer to ship as the dry time can take a few days until curred enough for shipping.
